Dogs on public transport
Dogs can be taken with you on many forms of public transport in Victoria, however there are conditions that must be adhered to. Guide dogs are exempt from these restrictions.
Melbourne metropolitan trains
For the comfort and safety of all passengers, please ensure that:
- Your dog is either inside a suitable animal container or on a leash and wearing a muzzle
- Any mess that your dog makes is cleaned up
- Your dog does not sit on seats
- Your dog does not block aisles or doors
- Your dog is kept under your control at all times
If possible, avoid travelling during peak weekday times. These times are from 7am to 9am in the morning and 4pm to 6pm in the afternoon.
Melbourne trams and buses
Due to space limitations, only small dogs can travel on Melbourne's trams or buses. They must be in a suitable animal container.
V/Line trains
Dogs are only permitted on V/Line trains if they are in a suitable animal container subject to these conditions:
- Only one container is allowed per traveller
- The container must allow your dog to comfortably stand up, lie down and turn around
- The container must be stored in assigned storage locations and cannot be on seats
- Any mess that your dog makes is cleaned up
Train conductors will confirm if space is available for your dog. It is recommended to avoid travelling during peak weekday times.
V/Line buses
Dogs are prohibited on V/Line buses, including those buses which temporarily replace train services.
